Biology Path
A diagnostic that will find where each student’s understanding of living systems breaks down, from cells to ecosystems, and build the path forward.
The problem
Where biology understanding breaks down
Biology connects big ideas: cells, genetics, evolution and ecosystems. A student who struggles with heredity might be missing how cells divide; one who struggles with ecosystems might be missing how energy flows.
- Science scores rarely show which concept is missing.
- Students can use the right vocabulary and still hold a misconception.
- Units move on before gaps are found.
Inside the Path
What the Biology Path covers
The Biology Path will cover the life science standards of the Next Generation Science Standards: structure and function from molecules to organisms, ecosystems and the flow of matter and energy, heredity and the variation of traits, and evolution by natural selection. NGSS pairs these ideas with science practices and crosscutting concepts such as cause and effect, and systems.
Where students get stuck
Persistent misconceptions include thinking plants get their food from the soil, believing individual organisms evolve because they need to, treating genes and traits as the same thing, and picturing energy recycled through an ecosystem the way matter is. These ideas can survive correct vocabulary, which is why a test score rarely reveals them.
What it does for you
What this Path will do
For teachers
Will tag each wrong answer to the misconception it reveals, and students will practice from the concept they’re missing.
More for teachersFor school leaders
Will bring the same gap-first approach to science classes across your school.
More for school leadersHow it works
How the Path will work
Diagnose
An adaptive diagnostic will move across the life science standards, choosing each question from the answers so far.
Trace
Answers will be traced back through a map of how biology ideas build on each other to the concept where understanding stops.
Rebuild
Students will get a skill path that starts at their gap.
Standards
Will be built on published standards
Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)
The Biology Path will be built on the Next Generation Science Standards, so its questions will line up with the standards your district already teaches in science.
The science
The method behind every Path
Item Response Theory
Each student’s ability is estimated from their answers, and each next question is the one expected to tell the most.
Prerequisite maps
Standards are mapped as a graph of which skills build on which, so a gap can be traced to where it starts.
Misconception tagging
Wrong answer choices are written to reveal specific misconceptions, from a controlled catalog.
Research
The research behind this Path
These published studies are about how students learn, not about SubjectPath itself.
Posner and colleagues’ model of conceptual change proposes that students give up an existing idea when they become dissatisfied with it and a new idea seems understandable, plausible and able to explain more.
Posner et al. (1982)Bishop and Anderson found that many students in a college non-majors biology course thought traits change because organisms need them, overlooking variation within a population.
